"Mission to Mars"

"Mission to Mars" is a satire and commentary on man's quest to go to the planet Mars. Much has been spoken about this mission and this piece talks about the type of "engine" that would be required to get there as well as the type of human. The "engine" depicted is a vintage internal combustion engine from a pesticide sprayer. The electric spark plug wire has been replaced by a transparent tube with small colourful particles. This suggests the obsolescence of oil and the internal combustion engine to get us to Mars, but adds human ingenuity in the form of a new fuel delivered to the spark plug through a transparent, fiber optic like cable. Looking at the whole piece human elements appear. The top element with two holes on either side is suggesting eyes of an astronaut in a helmet. The red engine represents the body to get to the red planet, and the bottom piece, the breathing filter for the mouth was the single reed mouthpiece from a clarinet. There is a vulnerability in the human that would undertake such a mission given the primitive technology for such an ambitious journey. Minimalist Industrial Assembly on plywood, 24" X 32", 2015.
